Ginger Ale Isn't The Cure

Well after having one of the worst cases of the flu I can ever remember this week I have some new knowledge to pass on. I'll spare you the details of the flu, let's just say I got a real ab workout.

I've known about the BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce & Toast) diet when you have the flu, but what I did not know is some of the things you should stay away from. One in particular was a home remedy I practically grew up on when sick. That of course is flat soda, especially Coke or Ginger Ale when you have flu like symptoms. Especially if we were vomiting or had diarrhea, this would be a total go to.

My wife called the advice nurse and much to my surprise they said to stay away from Coke or Ginger Ale. The sugar concentration can actually make the sickness get worse. This is according to the The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. I did some googling once I heard this, to see what else I possibly didn't know.

So what's one to do? There's lots of good websites that cover this topic, but basically don't drink anything within 3 hours of vomiting. Then start by drinking small amount of water. If you can keep that down after a copule hours, drink more water then add a re hydration sports type drink. Finally before you start back with food, down some probiotics. You need to help your gut out and get that good bacteria back in full force.

Take it easy, get some sun (it helps establish sleep patterns and get you healthy) and, if at all possible get some rest of course.
